The purpose of the International Year is to raise public awareness of the importance of
biodiversity and the consequences of its loss. It will also seek to promote the engagement of the public and other actors for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Year will also celebrate successes in realising the target of achieving a significant reduction in the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010. The objective is to obtain a commitment by the global community to reinforce implementation of the Convention.

The end result of the celebration of the International Year will be action at various levels as a result of targeted “public-awareness” and “political awareness” campaigns in collaboration with a number of partners. A comprehensive evaluation will be undertaken early in 2011 to measure the quality and quantity of the impact of IYB events. A report will be submitted to the United Nations General Assembly in fall 2011.

Non-government Organization (NGOs) will be an important vehicle for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to reach out to a number of specialized audiences for which the Secretariat would lack the funds or the expertise required for their mobilization.
